Lucas Road Water System

Size and number of connections

The system services 6 active connections.

Location

The system is located on Lucas Road, directly adjacent to the City of Castlegar, within RDCK Electoral Area J.

Source

The residents of Lucas Road were initially serviced by wells and surface sources.  The City of Castlegar now delivers potable water to these residences through a single connection point. This connection is metered and includes a backflow prevention unit to protect the city’s supply. Castlegar’s water intake is located just above the Keenleyside dam on Lower Arrow Lake.

System description

This system was rebuilt in 1989 and converted to a RDCK service at that time.

Treatment

Water delivered to Lucas Road households, as with all households served by the City of Castlegar’s water system, is treated. Castlegar’s water treatment plant uses chlorination as a disinfection method.

Storage

The Lucas Road system consists only of a distribution network and does not have any storage capacity.

Distribution system

The system includes 430 metres of polyethylene pipe. Reports suggest that this infrastructure is nearing half its useful lifespan.

Fire-fighting

The distribution system does not include any fire fighting infrastructure and is not designed for fire protection according to the Fire Underwriter Survey. Lucas Road, however, is located in a Fire Protection Service Area.

Significant issues

To reduce administrative, operation, and maintenance costs, the Lucas Road system could benefit over the long term by amalgamating with the Castlegar water system.

Plans for future upgrades

In order to allow for regular flushing of the distribution system, the RDCK plans to install a blow off standpipe at the end of the mainline in the near future.

Governance

This system is currently owned and operated by the RDCK.
