SITKUM CREEK - POST 2007 WILDFIRES

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has been made aware by the Ministry of Forest and Range and the Provincial Emergency Program of secondary hazards associated with intense wildfire behaviour such as was seen on the Springer and Sitkum Creek Fires. Since 2003 the province has been seeing some of the secondary effects of wildfire given drier soil condition and severity of the burns.  These secondary effects include soil erosion, debris flows, and long term slope stability concerns.  Generally, these hazards exist for a period of three to five years after the fire.

Information for Sitkum Creek Fire - Affected residents

The Regional District of Central Kootenay hosted an information meeting on September 18, 2007 at A.I. Collinson School gymnasium in order to discuss the Sitkum Creek Fire post wildfire hazards assessment.  At this meeting, residents were able to view presentations by Peter Jordan of the Ministry of Forests, and Rick Rodman of Klohn Crippen Berger Engineering and ask questions.     These presentations are available on the Attached Documents below.  Also attached is the Sitkum Creek Fire Post-Wildfire Risk Analysis.

As a follow-up to the public meeting the Regional District of Central Kootenay will continue to work with our partners and residents to ensure all pertinant information is available and shared.  To this end there are links to the Sitkum Creek Fire Post-Wildfire Risk Analysis prepared for the BC Ministry of Forests and Range and other studies available below.  As further information becomes available and supplied to residents, it will also be posted here to ensure everyone affected has access to this information.

Linked below is information provided by Klohn Crippen Berger on “What Can You Do If You Live Near a Recently Burned Area?” that was available at the public meeting.

Paper copies of the presentations and/or reports are available by contacting the Regional District.

Any new reports will be posted as quickly as possible to this website.
